Poultry
A common way to raise pastured poultry involves putting three-to-four week old meat chickens
in movable pens during the growing season. These pens are floorless and allow the chickens to eat at the
fresh pasture whenever they want. The chickens also receive a grain-based ration to keep them healthy.
Between 8 and 14 weeks, the chickens are butchered and sold to consumers. Pastured poultry can also be
used for there eggs, and with a large scale operation, many eggs can be produced and sold. Pastured poultry
can be a good supplementary enterprise on a diversified farm especially for farmers already in direct marketing
for other products. In addition, in a survey in 1999, 83% of pastured poultry customers felt that the pastured
chickens tasted better.
